Mercury Analytics Survey Finds Americans Divided on U.S. Military Action in Iran, with High Levels of Concern About Escalation and Economic Impact

40% support U.S. military action, while nearly half express concern about escalation and more than four in ten cite economic impact

Washington, DC — March 19, 2026 — Mercury Analytics today released new survey findings examining how Americans are responding to U.S. military action involving Iran. The survey finds that 40% of Americans say they support U.S. military action, while 32% oppose it and 28% report mixed feelings.

Political Affiliation Shapes Public Opinion

  • 71% of Republicans support military action, compared with 21% of Democrats
  • 54% of Democrats oppose the action, compared with 11% of Republicans
  • Independents are divided, with roughly one-third supporting, one-third opposing, and one-third reporting mixed feelings

Concern About Escalation, Retaliation, and Economic Impact

  • 47% say they are very concerned the conflict could expand regionally
  • 42% worry about retaliation or terrorist attacks
  • 42% cite economic concerns, including rising gas prices and inflation

At the same time, 75% of Americans express sympathy or goodwill toward the Iranian people.

Independent Voters Show Elevated Concern and Lower Confidence

  • More than 80% of Independents express concern that the conflict could expand into a broader regional war, including nearly half who are very concerned
  • Nearly half of Independents also report concern about retaliation or security risks to the United States and its allies

Confidence in President Trump’s Strategy

  • 82% of Republicans report being very or somewhat confident
  • 38% of Independents report being very or somewhat confident
  • Only 23% of Democrats report being very or somewhat confident

Estimated Length of U.S. military involvement in Iran

  • 58% of Republicans report several months to a year or longer
  • 77% of Independents report several months to a year or longer
  • 76% of Democrats report several months to a year or longer

“Americans are responding to a conflict unfolding in real time, with implications far beyond the region,” said Ron Howard, CEO of Mercury Analytics. “The data shows a public that is divided on the action itself but aligned in its concern about escalation, economic impact, potential terrorist threats in the United States, and broader global stability. The most important signal, however, is among Independent voters — where confidence is low, concern is high, and expectations of a prolonged conflict are widespread. This combination represents a clear risk zone for policymakers, as Independents are both less anchored and more decisive in shaping outcomes in the 2026 election cycle.”

About the Study

The findings are based on a nationally representative survey of 1,014 U.S. adults conducted by Mercury Analytics on March 11. The study used Mercury’s Qual at Scale methodology, combining traditional quantitative questions with deep qualitative IDI like probing of all participants, providing statistically robust insight into both the quantitative data and the qualitative perspectives of a national sample.
